Swedish winger Mervan Celik is set to become Ally McCoist’s first signing of the January transfer window.
After days of speculation, the 21-year-old is poised to put pen to paper today- assuming he passes his medical which was carried out this morning - and sign a three-and-a-half year contract with the SPL champions.
The deal seems to be a win-win situation for Rangers, as they will only have to stump up around £250,000 compensation to Celik’s former club GAIS. This means that if Celik shines in the Scottish Premier League, Rangers can potentially make a very healthy profit in the future.
Despite being only 21 and arguably still a raw talent, Celik banged in 18 goals in 68 appearances during his time with GAIS which alerted a host of clubs including Fulham, Middlesbrough, Parma, Genoa and Turkish side Gaziantepspor. He has also picked up five caps for Sweden’s Under 21 side, scoring three goals.
Ally McCoist will no doubt be delighted that he is set to pull of a major coup after fighting off interest from down South and Italy, and will be hoping that the deal doesn’t hit any last minute snags.
Rangers are also reported to have begun contract discussions with Enar Jaager, who has seemingly impressed the gaffer, whilst on trial this week. Assuming these discussions are positive and a deal can be struck, it is also reported that this could pave the way for Kirk Broadfoot to seek pastures new, with Bristol City, Blackpool and Leeds United all reportedly interested.
It doesn't look like David Weir is 'abandoning a sinking ship' - as the runners' up text joke stated - after all. This January transfer window is showing early signs of being a successful one, isn't it?
