Martin Bain, talking yesterday as he prepared for the draw for the Champions League this evening at 6pm, took time out to thank the Rangers support for their patience and support from the end of the season throughout season ticket renewal time and across the first part of the transfer window when Rangers were quiet. "I had asked the fans to be patient. I asked them to keep buying season tickets and to have faith in us. In fairness, they did exactly that.
Bain continued, "The Rangers supporters stuck by us and as a result we can at least be better equipped for the challenges that await us."
At the height of stress from supporters this summer, when Celtic were signing lots of players and the Rangers support had only seen a one-way revolving door, Bain had asked for calm.
Speaking then six weeks ago, both Bain and the gaffer insisted that Rangers were looking for quality over quantity and that there was several key targets which Smith wanted to bring to the club. As it transpires, Bain and Smith have proven true to their words as the club have seen the quality additions of Vladimir Weiss, James Beattie and Nikica Jelavic.
If you consider the transfer fees involved, signing on fees and contracts involved in aquiring these players then the protracted £5 milion budget plus any monies up front from players leaving is about right.
Bain continued that Smith had indicated to him exactly who he wanted and that he was able to go out and secure the services of the players within their budget.
"When we were at the Rangers Supporters' Convention in Vegas at the end of last season Walter told me Weiss was a player he wanted to bring in. He then pinpointed Beattie and Jelavic and they were the three players we managed to get."
"So we have managed to secure our top targets, although they had to be within our means. From that point of view, we have been successful."
Credit where it's due, Martin Bain has been fantastic this season and the squad is a lot better equipped for the season because of the support that we give the club and the patience and diligence of Bain.
