Rangers were tonight drawn in group C alongside Manchester United, Valencia and Bursaspor.

Rangers supporters will return to Manchester to play against Manchester United as they were drawn together. This will be the first time that the club will have returned to the city since the UEFA Cup Final against Zenit.

Manchester saw a massive number of Rangers supporters, a sight that has rarely been seen in football and there were some ugly scenes as some supporters reacted to poor policing and in some cases too much alcohol.

Interestingly, Walter Smith will be able to test himself against Sir Alex Ferguson, a man who helped re-launch Smiths career with a spell at Man U as his assistant before he returned for Scotland and then for Rangers. Ferguson has always been a confidant of the gaffer and the games in Ibrox and at Old Trafford will be a massive test for the gaffer and the players.

Rangers were also drawn against Valencia, a club whose recent financial difficulties make Rangers finances look like a penny in a wishing well. The club finished third in La Liga last term and have seen their crown jewels, the two Davids, Silva and Villa leave for Manchester City and Barcelona respectively.

The final team drawn in Rangers' group is Turkish club Bursaspor who won the Turkish league on the last day of the season, grasping the title to become only the second club from outside Istanbul to win the league.
