The Only Thing to Fear is Fear Itself

Doomsday is approaching fast at the end of this season. How do we know this? Well Walter Smith has alluded to it. Again there are no details. In fact he says that now is not the time to expand on it.

This has spread even more panic within the Rangers support not only in Scotland but throughout the world.

Internet forums such as Rangers Media, Follow Follow and Gersnet are full of panic stricken, doomsday posts. Protests are in the air and Lloyds Bank and D. Muir are the targets.

Based upon what? It may well be true that these people are the enemy of true Rangers fans and are upsetting Walter’s plans for a final flourish ON the playing field. The great thing this year is that the team, at least up until now, is getting results ON the field as we continue to tread water in a sea of red ink OFF the field and in the accounts.

On the field of play everything is in view. Any cheating is watched and corrected by a referee. Foul play is punished. All this is done in clear view of the watching fans. Off the field everything is cloak and dagger type stuff. Hidden meanings and subterfuge abound, like something straight out of a John Le Carre novel. Nobody really knows what is going on behind the scenes. Anyone who does know is simply not telling. Walter Smith the manager is again dropping hints, but only hints and then saying he cannot expand on what he said. This is infuriating to all.

It is the lack of clarity in the situation that is galling. God only knows what screaming and ripping of clothes would be going on if the team was performing poorly. That is divine intervention itself.

The big question is: Will organized protests have any result if the real culprit(s) are not clearly known?
The last time protests were hinted at the Bank said Rangers were running the club. Walter was mad.
He may be mad once more.

Many people are now saying we must force the Bank’s hand and they must tell us what is going on -hence the reasons for protests. Flags, banners, posters, etc. will be displayed targeting Lloyd’s Bank and D. Muir. By the way, it is my understanding that D. Muir was appointed by SDM and not the Bank.

If this bad publicity forces the Bank to come forward with more details then fine, but I am dubious. If this puts pressure on D. Muir to speak out, then that is great too. I agree that this fear of the unknown is what is driving most fans nuts just now.

Another thought is that since D. Muir was appointed by Sir David Murray (SDM) and not the Bank, would it be out of the question to think that perhaps the main point of D. Muir’s existence is to get as much money as possible for SDM? In order to do that perhaps there is now great conflict between the ideas of SDM and D. Muir and those of our New Chairman, M. Bain and Walter Smith? If so that may be what we are missing here. Maybe Lloyd’s Bank is correct in saying that Rangers is running the club. Just maybe though there are two faces to Rangers. One represented by D. Muir and SDM and the other by the Chairman and the rest of the Rangers Board. Again, this is pure conjecture.

When the accounts of M.I.H. are disclosed in April maybe we will learn more.
We, at present, just have no idea what is going on. I think by the end of the season the situation will be a lot clearer. For now remember the words of Sir Winston Churchill: We have nothing to fear but fear itself. That is so true.

Rangers are an institution. Like the card display on the front of the We Are The Rangers CD says – More Than a Club. We will survive this and prosper. There may be a white knight about to pounce as I write.
Rangers will succeed enormously even if we may have to step back for a year or two. We are just too big to fail. We are Rangers.
