What would the Ellis takeover mean for the proposed fan ownership schemes?

E-mail Print PDF

I was listening to Stevie Smith, from the RST on Radio Clyde last night and he still maintains that the Trust, the Assembly and the Association are all backing fan ownership of some kind whether it be a reduced stake in the club.

In my opinion, I can't see Ellis' consortium buying out 92% of Murray's shares if they really have to and if, and I stress if, the three supporters organisations can work together on this, could we finally see the Rangers supporters own a stake in the club which could mean a Rangers fan on the board?

When the RST, the Assembly and the Association got together and discussed this I thought it was a very positive step.

I've always been in favour of one organisation representing the support so it was good to see that all three were working together.

I also attended the conference held at Ibrox at the end of last year regarding fan ownership and was very impressed with what I heard from the representatives from across Europe.

I've never been in favour of 100% fan ownership as I believe it just isn't practical in our situation. However, from the start of this debate I've always thought we should have a minor, but significant share in the club say 20% or 25%.

This would give us a say in the running of the club and fans representation on the board.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to buy this type of stake in the club. Looking at my recent credit card statements its clear I'm no financial expert. However, if a significant sum can be raised I see no reason why

A. The new owners would not want additional finance brought into the club and

B. Supporters would not want a say in how the club was run.
